The kanji filter, nkf, is a popular way to change between different kanji codes from the command line or embedded inside of shell script.

   bash$ cat file | nkf -e        (converts to EUC)
   bash$ cat file | nkf -s        (converts to ShiftJIS)
   bash$ cat file | nks -j        (converts to JIS)

The nkf package is available in the jbase.tgz package in the base disk set of the JE distribution. Default installation is in /usr/bin.
